Sports report 2018-19
Cauvery College Virajpet is an embodiment of value based education and serene campus. The institution along with nurturing meritorious students has also been an active breeding ground for talented sportspersons. Since its inception in 1980 the college has been a cradle of gifted sports luminaries who have brought glory at different level. During the academic year 2018-19 the Physical Education Department has been actively involved in organizing and participating in various sporting events and through this report we would like to shed light on the sporting achievements of the institution which has been encouragingly curated by the esteemed management and our beloved Principal.
Our men’s and women’s Table tennis team participated in Mangalore University inter-collegiate table tennis championship held at MGM College Udupi in the month of August 2018. The women’s team captained by Dechamma.B.D. of III B.Com and comprising of M.S.Machamma III B.Com , Shabna I B.Com and Vilma II B.Com emerged as winners in the preliminary round and qualified for the championship round. The men’s’ table tennis team was captained by Chethan.V.Y. II B.Com included Mithun, Gajendra, and the team was coached by Mr. H.V.Nagaraju, HOD of Economics.
The men’s football team captained by Ramesh.S.D. participated in Mangalore University inter-collegiate football tournament held at University campus Konaje and achieved victories over Tippu Sulthan College, Ullal and Yenopaya College, Mangalore. Mr. Somanna.C.M. Lecturer in Commerce coached the team.
The hoopsters of our college participated in Mangalore University inter-collegiate basketball championship held at NITTE College Karkala on 5th and 6th of October 2018. The team played seven matches in the preliminary rounds and qualified for the championship round. In the nail biting finals we lost the gold medal narrowly and out of 210 colleges in Mangalore university Cauvery College Virajpet stood second. The coach of the basketball team Mr. Irshad played an important role in the success of the team.
The Department of Physical Education conducted 20 days football and basketball special camps in order to prepare the players for Mangalore university intercollegiate competition. Hockey and ball badminton camps were also conducted and a series of practice matches with the different sports clubs were organized to enhance the performance.
Hockey players Bopanna II BBA and Ponnana II B.Com represented Mangalore University hockey team in the south zone tournament held at Tamilnadu. Sanath Kumar III B.Com and Rafique III BA represented Mangalore University basketball team and played south zone university matches held at Tamilnadu.
As part of the sports day celebrations different sports events were organized for the students by the Students’ Welfare Association. The events were officiated exclusively by the students, resulted inculcating comradeship and sportsmanship spirit.
The Department of Physical Education also organized inter-college District level traditional sports meet and inter-collegiate women’s rural sports meet in the month of March successfully.
The men’s hockey team of our institution brought laurels to the college by winning state level hockey tournament conducted by Sapient College, Mysore and was rewarded with Rs. 25,000 cash prize and a glittering trophy. Continuing their successful sojourn the men’s hockey team emerged as runners up in the state level MICA hockey tournament held at Mysore and were awarded Rs.10, 000 cash prize.
The Department of Physical Education also put on sound display of it’s organization skills by organizing ‘Kautuka’ - State level hockey and basketball tournament on March 29th and 30th, which was sponsored by Alchemy Coffee Roasters in memory of Shri Butiyanda Jimmy Achappa and Smt. Ashwini Achappa, in collaboration with Cauvery College Alumni Association Virajpet.
Ponnana II B.Com has officiated series of district league matches and state level tournament in various part of Karnataka in this seasons and earned fame for our college. Sports secretary Kiran III B.Com has undergone basket ball training in Punjab to find a place in Indian army basketball team.
Our hockey and football players are sought after by various sports clubs of our district to play league tournaments organized by Hockey Kodagu and Kodagu District Football Association.
Our two ball badminton players Muthappa and Junaid participated in 10 days of university camp organized by Mangalore University at Alvas College Moodbidri.
The Department of Physical Education would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. K.C.Bopanna, Director Cauvery Education Society and in-charge of sports for providing timely suggestion and support for all our activities.
Mr. M.A.Nachappa Director of Physical Education Cauvery PU College deserves accolades for fine tuning the skills of our sportspersons and he also conducted one month regress coaching camp to impart advance hockey skills. Harish, our administrative staff has played an important role in training the ball badminton team.
